What Is Round Dancing
Differences between Square Dancing and Round Dancing
Square Dancing and Round Dancing share the same friendly dance community, but they offer two different styles of movement and music.
Square Dancing is a lively group dance for four couples arranged in a square. A caller gives instructions in real time, creating a unique sequence every time you dance. The fun comes from teamwork, quick thinking, and the joy of moving together as a group.
Round dancing is choreographed and cued ballroom dancing. Couples dance to familiar rhythms such as waltz, foxtrot, cha cha, rumba, tango, jive, and many more, guided in real time by a cuer who prompts each figure just ahead of the music.
This makes the activity social, accessible, and wonderfully varied.
Both forms complement each other beautifully at dance events.
Square dancing brings energy and group connection, while round dancing adds musical expression and smooth partner movement.
Together they create the full experience of our round dance community.
How It Works
Unlike free‑style ballroom dancing, every round dance is fully choreographed in advance. A piece of music is chosen, and the choreographer selects figures that match the phrasing, emotion, and timing of the song.
When the music swells, the choreography rises with it; when there’s syncopation*, a quick step fits neatly into that moment. These instructions are written on a “cue sheet.”
During the dance, the cuer stands at the front of the room and calls each figure just before it’s needed. This allows dancers to enjoy a wide variety of dances without memorising long routines.
It is similar in spirit to square dancing, where a caller guides the dancers, just with ballroom figures instead of squares.
Why It’s So Enjoyable?
Because the choreography is already created, dancers can focus on moving smoothly together rather than inventing steps on the fly.
Instead of repeating the same handful of figures, a single round dance may include 30–40 different movements, all arranged to fit the music beautifully. The result is dancing that feels expressive, flowing, and endlessly interesting.
Round dancing offers mental and physical challenge, musicality, and the joy of dancing with a partner, all in a friendly, social environment.
* Syncopation is the practice of displacing the beats or accents in music or a rhythm so that strong beats become weak and vice versa.
